Welcome to the Springfield Public School’s
English Language Learning (ELL) Program
I am pleased to welcome you to the Springfield Public School’s
English Language Learning (ELL) Program homepage. The ELL program
homepage offers a wealth of information about our program including
the ELL Program Description, ELL Plan, The Parent Information Corner,
Events and Teacher Resources, ELL Related Links, and a listing of
the Program staff. You will also find the ELL Parent Newsletter,
Bilingual Parent Advisory Board resources, professional development
opportunities, and electronic links and technological resources.
These links provide invaluable information concerning the education
of our students.
We are proud of the students in the Springfield Public Schools.
Our students represent over twenty different language groups from
around the world. Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese are the language
groups most represented in the English Language Learning Program.
We are privileged to have such a diverse community of learners.
Our mission is to prepare students to become competent learners,
able to communicate successfully in English and in all of their
school academic life by providing comprehensive Sheltered English
Instruction. Our program is built on the premise that all children
can learn best in a language mode that is comprehensible. We teach
and develop competent students in the areas of listening, speaking,
reading, and writing in English. The program focuses on providing
every student the opportunity to grow to his or her maximum potential.
We concentrate on high achievement, the belief that all students
can succeed, and that good teaching begins with identifying the
strengths of each student.
By working together we can ensure that every Limited English Proficient (LEP) child can
realize their full potential and obtain academic success in a culture of achievement. The
Springfield Public Schools goal under a Culture of Educational Excellence is to maximize
opportunities to learn so that all students can achieve academic success. The English Language
Learning Department is committed to this philosophy. We encourage your participation and
solicit your help to ensure that every child can realize their full potential and obtain
academic success in a culture of achievement.
Please participate in school related activities and events, curriculum
development, and professional development initiatives to meet the
needs of our students. I am counting on you to support our students
as they embark upon their journey to English proficiency.
Sincerely yours,
Sylvia Galván, Director
English Language Learning Program
