Overview
of the Springfield School District
The Springfield
school district is a reform-oriented organization led by its Superintendent, Dr.
Alan Ingram, and an active School Committee comprising six elected members and the
Chair, Mayor Domenic J. Sarno. A mid-sized city at the crossroads of Interstate
91 and the Massachusetts Turnpike, the Springfield Public Schools enrolled just
under 25,000 students in 51 schools during the 2008-2009 school year.
Demographically,
50% of Springfield’s public school students are identified as Latino, 26%
African-American, 18% White, 4% mixed race, and 2% Asian. The student body is also
characterized by significant immigration; 13% of students are limited in English
proficiency and are enrolled in English Language Learning programs. More than 77%
of all public school students in Springfield live in households at or below the
federal poverty line.
While poverty does
not affect all children in the same way, research shows that youth are more at risk
of educational failure when poverty occurs early in their lives. In this context,
and given the clear evidence of good practice embodied in recent scientifically-based
research, Springfield’s educational force of approximately 2200 teachers participates
in extensive in service training and development. Professional development is provided
through a job embedded model, and is coordinated through the district’s state-of-the-art
Professional Development Center.
